I predict that: By eviscerating doctor-patient confidentiality in mental health cases,
the legislation that New York governor Andrew Cuomo just signed will result in more additional deaths, as a result of suicides (and occasional homicides) by people who otherwise would have sought treatment, than there are lives saved as a result of the firearms restrictions.
I really do not want to be proven right on this. Now that the law is in effect, however, New York State is in effect conducting an epidemiological experiment. There are proven methods of statistical analysis for comparing the suicide rate over the next few years with pre-2013 data and with other jurisdictions.
Now we just wait for the bodies to drop.
